On Sunday, June 18, 2006, Alex Segura of Orlando, Florida, will embark on a cycling journey up a southern portion of the east coast to raise awareness and funds for ALS. The ALS Tour de South will kick-off in Miami, Florida and end nearly 1,100 miles away at First Horizon Park in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday, July 1st. Alex is riding in honor and memory of all those with ALS, and their caregivers.   He is also riding to recognize his lifelong friend, Keith Wood, who serves as the inspiration for this endeavor. Keith and Alex grew up together in Miami, Florida. They also attended college together in Tennessee, and were roommates for two of their four years in college. Keith, who was diagnosed with ALS in May of 2003, now lives in Greensboro with his wife and four little girls.

Upon hearing the news of Keith's diagnoses and watching how the disease was affecting his friend, Alex, an avid cyclist, set out to learn more about ALS.  Determined to make a difference, he decided to combine his passion for cycling with his will to increase awareness of and funding for the disease that robs Keith and many others of the full use of their body.  Alex intends to meet with PALS and their families along the route, which takes him up the coast of Florida through West Palm Beach, Vero Beach, Daytona Beach and Jacksonville Beach; Odum, Statesboro and Augusta, Georgia; Columbia, SC and finally, Charlotte, Kannapolis and Greensboro, NC.  Plans are underway for a welcome celebration in Greensboro on July 1st.
