Driving Evaluations

Most people view driving as a daily occurrence that permits independence. ALS may potentially affect your ability to drive; therefore, a comprehensive driving evaluation should be taken. These evaluations are different than screening tests to renew your license. The evaluation helps to determine if your medical condition may be affecting your driving ability.

The Evaluation is conducted in two parts. A clinical evaluation is used to determine if your vision, arms, legs and mental capacity meet the minimum standards to drive in your state. This portion of the Evaluation is usually conducted by an Occupational Therapist who can also recommend adaptive equipment for your vehicle.

The second portion of the Evaluation is an on-road test. During this test, your visual, mental and behavioral skills will be evaluated as well as your response to traffic situations.

Rehabilitation Centers (e.g., Vocational Rehabilitation Centers, Veterans Administration Centers) usually provide the best driving evaluations. State licensing agencies also give driving evaluations.
