Over the summer, high school senior Macon Cornick’s father was diagnosed with ALS. With help from her mother Gina, she planned a tennis tournament to raise awareness and funds for The ALS Association - Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter.

On Sunday October 18, 2009 at Saint Mary’s School (Raleigh), the community came out in packs of red and white. This cold October day started with the Saint Mary’s chorus singing the National Anthem. Tables lined the courts with red and white balloons, information on A.L.S., home baked goodies, refreshments and even Goodberry’s ice cream. Supporters showed up in their “Rally to Defeat ALS” t-shirts, designed by a friend of Macon’s, Kensi Luck. At 1:00pm, 48 participants, including friends, family, alumnae and students, stepped out on the courts for two separate rounds of round robin doubles. Up and down the river was the game of choice with the winner moving up a court and the loser moving down. After doubles, four local teaching professionals and college players (Shelby Cannon, James Cox, Will Plyler, and Bobby Mariencheck) took the court for a thrilling exhibition doubles match. Over 150 spectators lined the fences and cheered on their favorite team. Over $5,000 was raised during the tournament and all of the proceeds will go towards the Saint Mary’s School team for the Triangle Walk to Defeat ALSTM on April 10, 2010.
The rally is something Macon, her family, and the Saint Mary’s community will remember for a long time to come. “The unbelievable love and generosity that was shown on that day, touched the hearts of my dad, mom, sister and I, and brought us true joy and hope that this disease will be defeated one day. October 18, 2009 was more than just a day of service, it was a day of memories and fun that will be remembered forever.” Macon Cornick.
