Horizon Eye Care Announces Winner of "Walk the Extra Mile" Challenge
CHARLOTTE, NC – August 5, 2008 – Horizon Eye Care, one of Charlotte’s leading ophthalmology practices, announced Sara Slone of Fort Mill, SC, as the winner of its “Walk the Extra Mile” Challenge. For the “Walk the Extra Mile” Challenge, Horizon Eye Care teamed up with The ALS Association – Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter and its Charlotte Walk to Defeat ALS™, held May 31, 2008. Participants who raised $500 or greater for the Walk to Defeat ALS, The ALS Association’s flagship fundraising event, were entered in a drawing to win free LASIK eye surgery, a service valued at over $3,000.
With the “Walk the Extra Mile” Challenge, Horizon Eye Care will be remembering its former LASIK Director, Wijdan Bedwan, who lost her battle with ALS this past winter at a young age of 37. Ms. Bedwan was instrumental in building Horizon’s in-house LASIK Center in 2000, running the center with the highest of standards and patient care. “Wijdan was a key contributor to the LASIK center at Horizon Eye Care,” said Paul G. Galentine, MD, Chairman of Horizon Eye Care. “She was the embodiment of the qualities that Horizon Eye Care truly values, both professionally and personally.”
In addition to the “Walk the Extra Mile” Challenge, Horizon Eye Care also participated in the Walk to Defeat ALS with their corporate Walk team, “Eyes on a Cure.” To date, the team has raised nearly $5,000 for the Charlotte Walk to Defeat ALS to go to ALS research, programs, and advocacy. With the help of Horizon Eye Care and Team Eyes on a Cure, the 2008 Charlotte Walk became the most successful event for the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, raising over $250,000 for the fight against ALS.
