Assistive Technology Grant Program The Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter’s ALS Assistive Technology Grant Program (replaces the Augmentative Communication Grant Program) assists PALS and their families in North Carolina with the purchase of equipment that can make daily living easier. Recipients may apply for and receive one grant per year for $1,000. This grant is designed to cover equipment used to assist in mobility and communication. It can also be used for computers, software and environmental controls. Grant approval will be based on need, the number of applicants and funds available.

Adaptation and Equipment Program The Adaptation and Equipment Program operated by the Catfish Chapter houses limited durable medical equipment that is normally not covered by insurance. If other resources have been exhausted and equipment is available the Chapter may be able to loan the needed equipment to assist PALS in daily living needs. If and when the equipment is no longer needed, it can be returned to the Chapter for use by other PALS.

The Flex Grant Program assists families with expenses that are not traditionally covered by insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and other assistance programs. It will cover, but is not limited to, home modifications, such as ramps and bathroom upgrades, generators, auto modifications, wheelchair modifications and repairs. Recipients may apply for and receive two grants per year for $500 each. Grant approval will be based on need, the number of applicants and funds available.

The Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter maintains an information library as a service to our PALS and their CALS. The library contains a wide variety of books and videos that you might find helpful. Some items are available for loan while others are available to keep.

Lowe's Home Modification Grant Program Grants provided construction materials for projects enhancing mobility, increasing independence and improving the quality of life for people living with ALS in North Carolina. Grants were made possible due to the generosity of the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. Grants were awarded for projects including, but not limited to, bathroom or kitchen modifications and exterior projects that will improve accessibility to one’s home.

Respite care is defined as an interval of rest or relief. Respite care gives the family caregiver an opportunity to take a much-needed break from the daily care that is being provided for a loved one. The Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter Respite Care Grant Program assists caregivers of ALS patients by providing funds for respite services. Grants will be awarded in the amount of $500 each. The maximum number of grants per caregiver is four per year, totaling $2,000. This will be based on need, the number of applicants and funds available.

The Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter Transportation Program assists patients and caregivers with transportation services in our coverage area of North Carolina. Transportation issues can arise as ALS progresses, and once a person becomes wheelchair dependent, a van is needed to assist with transportation outside the home. This program helps to reduce the expenses of transportation and is awarded in the amount of $250 per grant. The maximum number of grants per patient is four each year, totaling $1,000. This will be based on need, the number of applicants and funds available.
